Instant Publisher — What is the problem?

I contacted InstantPublishers. I wrote a young adult book and I contacted InstantPublisher. They had a nice ad in Writer’s Digest Magazine, good press on their website and the price was right. This would be my 3rd publisher. I talked with a very nice man named Craig. My account was to be handled by a woman named Becky. I was to mail my file as PDF. The book was to be 5’x 8′. I did so and she said it was the wrong size. I changed it to 2 up per page sent it, and it was still the wrong size according to Becky. She said to email my file as the word document it was in. I did as instructed. The first proof she sent was jumbled. I said this was not good. She said she would try again. She sent me another proof and this one you needed a microscope to read it. I could see where this was going so I told her since it had not gone to press yet to cancel the order and refund my $138.00 credit card charge for one half of the 50 book order, and to delete the files I sent her. She said they would have to charge me $85.00 as the covers were already printed. The first 2 publishers I had previously dealt with had me send my files in word and they did not have a problem converting them to 5×8? I don’t know if Becky is not experienced enough or what the problem was? It is unfortunate that the book could not have been printed. .
